History of Old  Nursery Rhymes

The term nursery rhyme is used for “traditional” poems for young children in Britain and many other countries, but usage only dates from the 19th century and in North America the older ‘Mother Goose Rhymes’ is still often used.

~ Two Examples ~

” Little Miss Muffet “

Little Miss Muffet

Sat on a tuffet,

Eating her curds and whey,

Along came a spider,

Who sat down beside her

And frightened Miss Muffet away.

” Three Blind Mice ‘

Three blind mice, three blind mice,
See how they run, see how they run,
They all ran after the farmer’s wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife,
Did you ever see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice?
