You’ll Break Your Mother’s Back

Don’t step on a crack or you’ll break your Mother’s back !

Does that sound like anything you said when you were a kid?

Now I’m talking to 50, 60, and 70 year old folks that might have

lived in the city or suburbs when they were kids. You younger ones,

read on and you will find out what I’m talking about and have a laugh or

two on the way. I was in first, second and third grade when I walked to

school every day. We walked on cement sidewalks and NEVER stepped

on the long crack that separated each sidewalk square. Some of the large

cement squares had many cracks in them so it was a real difficult task to

keep moving and not step on one of them. You had to keep moving too.

You couldn’t take your time checking ahead before you put your foot down.

It was step, step, step, ooops. You couldn’t, you just could not step on one

because you would really hurt your mother, least way’s that’s what we really

believed. Well maybe not all the kids my age.
